Formal Letter (Descriptive Reflection)

Submission 1: Formal Letter (Descriptive Reflection)

Dear Professor Brad Blackstone,

My name is Matthew Kang from your Effective Communication class. I’m writing this letter hoping you can understand me a little better than you are now. I have had a reasonably longer route to education compared to others. I graduated from the Institute of Technical Education(ITE) Aerospace Engineering in 2010, after which I served my National Service. In 2013 I gained admission to Nanyang Polytechnic, Diploma in Mechatronic Engineering where I graduated in 2016. After graduating, I worked as an Aircraft Technician at Singapore Airline Engineering Company(SIAEC), I decided to further my studies after 3 and a half years, which leads me to now.

I had a very fruitful experience, in SIAEC where I got to work on varying aircraft and engines. It was really interesting to see the engines and the internal mechanisms at work. There was always something to learn every day. This sparked my interest in engineering which led me to further my education in SIT Mechanical Engineering.

I consider being very approachable as my strength in communication skills. Over my education and career, I’m able to interact and mingle with people with varying personalities. As for my weakness, I still consider myself an introvert regardless of the experience. I still struggle to initiate a conversation with strangers.

From this module, I would like to improve my English language and presentation skills as I’m struggling at the moment. I hope to learn to present myself better over time as I’m learning from you. I also want to improve my writing skills to be clear and concise when delivering to the receiver.

Something special about me is that I enjoy ever upgrading technology, Gundam, game console, Virtual and Augmented Reality. When I build my Gundam models, I’m amazed at how all the small and complex parts can come together as a whole. The complexity of the design interests me.

I look forward to your classes in the future and improving myself every week.

Yours sincerely,

Matthew Kang

  1. Hi Matthew

This was an interesting read. What I enjoy about is the positivity that you projected through your words that reflects the effort you have put in to write this.

I am impressed by your choice of furthering your studies even after working for a long time. What fascinates me is your deep appreciation of something of Gundam models where others would consider a hobby. I can also relate to your weakness as I also find myself struggling to initiate conversations with strangers.

I have no doubt that you will overcome your weakness as you seem to be genuinely determined to improve yourself. Stay safe and take care.

    Regards,
    Karim

  2. Hi Matthew, I enjoyed reading your letter, especially the part where you mentioned about how your experiences at work sparked your interest to join this course. As an introvert myself, I know how hard and mentally draining it is to initiate conversations, let alone giving a presentation. However, I am sure that once give yourself a push and step out of your comfort zone, you will gradually be more comfortable with doing so. All the best.

  3. Dear Matthew,

Thank you for this well developed, interesting letter. You certainly portray yourself as being quite unique in terms of your background and extensive work experience. I hope you can share what you have learned in the workplace with your various class teammates. It's also good to see that you were inspired to continue your studies at SIT by your enthusiasm for learning.

In terms of your comm skills weaknesses and your goals for the module, we will certainly address everything that you have mentioned (as you can already see). I look forward to hearing more from you this term.

    Best wishes,

    Brad
